Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sign up for both challenges?

Yes! You are welcome to sign up for a single challenge or both challenges (as long as you fall within the age range for the Badge Book Challenge).

Do I have to complete the Oceans of Possibilities Challenge BEFORE I do the Badge Book Challenge?

No, you can work on the challenges in any order. They are separate challenges with separate methods of tracking.

Can I count a book I’m reading in both challenges?

No, your reading can only count towards one challenge. If you are working on two challenges, you will need to pick which challenge your current reading is counting towards.

I read really long books. What if I don’t have time to read 9 of them in two months to complete the Oceans of Possibilities Challenge?

That’s OK! You can read 3 books and do 6 activities. You just need a total of 9 badges to complete the Oceans Challenge.

Do I have to read library books to count for a challenge?

While we prefer that you read books from our library, any reading will count…even audiobooks!

Can my five year old participate in the Badge Book Challenge?

No, our Badge Book Challenge is only for ages 6-17 due to some of the reading and writing prompts included in the Badge Book. But our ongoing 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge is open to children ages 0-6!

I used the Beanstack App last year- do I need to create a new account?

No, you will use the same account from previous years. The app may ask you to update your information, then you will be able to enroll in any available challenges!

It’s May 30th- can I log my reading in the Beanstack App?

While you can track your reading anytime in the Beanstack App, it will only count towards a challenge after June 1st.

I don’t have internet at home or a smartphone. Do I HAVE to use the Beanstack App?

No, you can track your reading on a blue log sheet for the Oceans Challenge or in a paper Badge Book for the Badge Book Challenge. If you are tracking your reading on paper, please remember to bring the paper log sheet/Badge Book into the library with you when you have completed the challenge! Staff will need to see it to give you your completion prize!
