Youths can read to dogs at Belt Branch library

Posted by kelly on

Youths can practice their reading skills by reading to trained therapy dogs on Tuesdays in August at Rolling Hills Library Belt Branch, 1904 N. Belt.

The 20-minute sessions will be offered 10-11 a.m. on Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25, with youths reading individually to a dog. Parents can sign up their children at the library or online at rhcl.libcal.com.

Local members of Pet Partners, a national organization dedicated to improving people’s well-being through positive interaction with animals, are providing the dogs and will be at the reading sessions.

Reading out-loud to dogs is a great way for children to build confidence in their reading skills because dogs can’t criticize their abilities. The reading sessions also help children retain their reading fluency while out of school.

The sessions are free and open to all children who are beginning readers and older. For more information, call the library at 816-232-5479.

Grant providing library with books, toys

Posted by kelly on

Books and educational toys for children are being added to Rolling Hills Library through a $4,000 grant administered by the Missouri State Library.
The library recently received a Racing to Read Story Time Plus grant to purchase $2,000 worth of early literacy books and $2,000 worth of puppets, puppet trees, tabletop puppet theaters, puzzles, blocks and educational toys for the Belt Branch, 1904 N. Belt, and the Savannah Branch, 514 W. Main.
The items and promotional materials that come with the grant promote ways for parents to prepare their children for reading, starting with babies and continuing through preschool.
The grant is supported by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act and administered by the state library. The institute is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,000 museums, and its mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.11694758_10152869091697343_7993067288571325826_n 11665389_10152869097257343_5821223870786956780_n
